Alessandro Mendini awarded European Prize for Architecture 2014

Alessandro Mendini was awarded the European Prize for Architecture 2014 for his influence in contemporary architecture and design.

Italian architect, philosopher, architectural theorist, visionary and design practitioner, the influence of Alessandro Mendini in contemporary architecture spans close to half a century. His work ranges from the creation of iconic objects, furnishings, interiors, paintings and installations to architecture and urban planning, and also includes significant theoretical work, both with the famous Studio Alchimia and with his brother Francesco, an architect, with whom he founded Atelier Mendini in 1989.

Awarded annually since 2010 by the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, the European Prize for Architecture is awarded to those “rare architects who have demonstrated the highest standard of public design and have significant contributed to humanity and to the built environment through the highest art of architecture.”

Mendini received the Prize on February 9, 2015 in a ceremony in Milan. An exhibition on the work of Mendini opens at The European Centre’s Contemporary Space in Athens this month and continues through March 2015. After Athens, the exhibition will tour Europe and the United States opening at the Third Chicago Architecture Biennial in September, 2015.

Last year, Mendini was awarded a lifetime career award from the XXIII Compasso d’Oro 2014. SACI is proud to include Alessandro Mendini as a member of the SACI Artists Council. In 2010, the SACI Gallery hosted Alessandro Mendini: Proust Histoire (1976-2010), an exhibition and conference presenting Mendini and his design work.
