Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition in Milan, Italy, from May 1 to October 31, 2015. Over this six-month period, Milan will be a global showcase where more than 140 participating countries will show the best of their technology that offers a concrete answer to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium. In addition to the exhibitor nations, the Expo also involves international organizations, and expects to welcome over 20 million visitors to its 1.1 million square meters of exhibition area.
A platform for the exchange of ideas and shared solutions on the theme of food, stimulating each country’s creativity and promoting innovation for a sustainable future, Expo 2015 will give everyone the opportunity to find out about, and taste, the world’s best dishes, while discovering the best of the agri-food and gastronomic traditions of each of the exhibitor countries.
With Milan selected as the host-city for the Universal Exposition, Italy then chose Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life as its central theme. Expo Milano 2015 will talk about the problems of nutrition and the resources of our planet. The idea is to open up a dialogue between international players, and to exchange views on these major challenges which impact everyone.
Expo Milano 2015 examines human history through the lens of two aspects of food production: traditional cultural values and the use of new technologies. These two aspects do not stand apart, but are very much interconnected. Besides being an opportunity for industry players to meet, the Universal Exposition is part of a cultural journey that aims to highlight the changes that the entire population of the planet is currently facing.
Expo Milano 2015 is an extraordinary universal event that will give visibility to traditions, creativity and innovation, presenting them in the light of new, global scenarios where the right to healthy, safe and sufficient food for the entire planet is at their core. As the planet’s life force, food is required for sustainable development, based on a need for properly maintained physical sustenance, out of respect for all basic human practices, and for good health.
The Expo is a Universal Exposition that is non-commercial (and therefore not a fair). It is organized by a competing country that wins the bid to host the fair and involves the participation of other nations invited through its diplomatic channels. The first Expo was held in London in 1851, and its success prompted other countries to organize similar events such as the Paris Expo in 1889, memorable for its Eiffel Tower.
