The 14th International Venice Biennale Architecture Exhibition, Fundamentals is curated by Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas (OMA), and takes place from June 7th to November 23rd, 2014, at the Giardini and the Arsenale, as well as in various other venues around the city. In alternating years to the Venice Biennale of Art, this international exhibition about architecture is not to be missed! Plan one-two days to visit all of the venue locations.
According to Koolhaas, “Fundamentals will be a Biennale about architecture, not architects. After several Biennales dedicated to the celebration of the contemporary, Fundamentals will focus on histories – on the inevitable elements of all architecture used by any architect, anywhere, anytime (the door, the floor, the ceiling etc.) and on the evolution of national architectures in the last 100 years. In three complementary manifestations – taking place in the Central Pavilion, the Arsenale, and the National Pavilions – this retrospective will generate a fresh understanding of the richness of architecture’s fundamental repertoire, apparently so exhausted today.”
65 nations will be exhibiting in the historic pavilions in the Giardini, the Arsenale, and around the city of Venice. Among these, 10 countries will be participating in the Exhibition for the first time: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, New Zealand, and Turkey.
This year the Italian Pavilion is based in the Arsenale and organized by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities with PaBAAC (general direction for landscape, fine arts, architecture and contemporary art), and it is curated by Cino Zucchi. The title of the exhibition is Innesti/grafting.
22 official Collateral Events, presented by international entities and institutions, which will present their exhibitions and initiatives in various locations around Venice concurrently with the 14th Exhibition.
