ICONS, an exhibition of photographs by American photographer and 20th century icon, Elliott Erwitt (b. 1928), can be viewed through August 31, 2014 in San Gimignano at the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Of note in the exhibition are a series of rarely seen self-portraits by Erwitt, including some in color of the photographer playing his own alter ego, André S. Solidor. Also on view are well-known portraits of famous figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Che Guevara. A photographic reporter who traveled greatly, Erwitt captured images from around the world of people, metropolises, and landscapes, as well. His images create a narrative of the 20th century, filled with light-hearted irony mixed with reality, creating surreal and dramatic scenes. The exhibition wouldn’t be complete without the series of images of Erwitt’s dogs in comical contexts.
