For the first time in Rome, the work of one of the greatest painters and printmakers of the eighteenth-century Venice, Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770), is on exhibition at the Musei Capitolini through January 18, 2015. In the history of European figurative art, the impressive quantity and variety of designs produced by Tiepolo stands out as a great monument of eighteenth-century graphic representation.

The art of Giambattista Tiepolo shows the use of brilliant basic elements in drawing by a prolific artist who also organized a unique family workshop, where he included the graphic activities of his sons Giandomenico and Lorenzo in one of the last great examples of a centuries-old tradition of the Venetian atelier. Intended mostly for earning a living, a huge collection of works was produced with an extensive variety of registers calibrated by the artist. In this sense, the great range of techniques and subjects defines the “color of the drawing.” For the exhibition, a selection of works from Italian collections rarely seen by the general public shows this great narrative through drawings, etchings, and paintings by Tiepolo and his sons.
