Marc Chagall in Milan: September 17, 2014 – February 1, 2015

Get a double dose of Marc Chagall on your next visit to Milan where two exhibitions are running simultaneously at the Palazzo Reale and the Museo Diocesano.

MARC CHAGALL: A Retrospective 1908-1985

The Palazzo Reale is presenting the largest retrospective ever devoted to Marc Chagall in Italy. Over 220 works, mostly paintings, will guide visitors from Le Petit Salon (1908), his first painting to the last monumental works of the 1980s. The exhibition exhibits for the first time many works from private collections, and sometimes unpublished masterpieces from major museums of the world. The theme of the exhibition is centered on a new interpretation of the language of Chagall, whose poetic vein has been building over the course of the twentieth century through the mixture of the major Western European traditions: from Jewish to Russia cultures to the artist’s encounter with French avant-garde painting.

MARC CHAGALL and the Bible

The Diocesan Museum of Milan presents Marc Chagall and the Bible, a complete exhibition that Palazzo Reale dedicated to the artist. The exhibition, conceived as a real section of the retrospective “Marc Chagall“, offers the chance to admire 60 works that the artist dedicated to the message of the Bible, including paintings, gouaches, etchings, sculptures and ceramics. The exhibition includes 22 gouaches previously unpublished, from which it is possible to grasp the artist’s preference for one-dimensional compositions with intentional absence perspective, creating an almost realistic representation of a highly imaginative and evocative narrative.
