Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera

September 20, 2014 – February 8, 2015

Palazzo Ducale, Genova

In the prestigious halls of the Palazzo Ducale in Genova, a major exhibition to presents the artistic and biographical sketch of one of the most famous couples of the twentieth century. Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera presents more than 120 works, curated by Helga Prignitz-Poda, with the collaboration of Cristina Kahlo (Frida’s great-grandson) and Juan Coronel Rivera (nephew of Diego), with the aim of telling the secret ties that united the two artists so profoundly and how their creative expression developed over time.

What was known as “the union of an elephant with a dove”, the complex relationship of Frida and Diego was an expression of their very personal experiences with no differentiation between daily life and art. Frida’s paintings will be on display (and in particular her self-portraits) such as Diego on My Mind, Self-portrait Wearing a Velvet Dress, Diego and I, or the Self-portrait in a Sun Flower that was painted a few days before her death, but also drawings and a plaster corset on which Frida painted the Communist hammer and sickle over the fetus’s own painful abortion. Diego will be represented to a large extent by his oil paintings (especially the large portraits in which he excelled in such as the Oaxacan Lady, Portrait of Natasha Gelman, Calla Lilly Vendors, but also the notebooks from his trip to Italy, never exhibited before, a nude portrait of Frida, as well as one of his great murals reconstructed for the exhibition.
