October 2014: SACI MFA in Studio Art students visit London

SACI MFA students in studio art took a 4-day field trip earlier this month to London to experience the city’s invigorating international contemporary art scene. Their visit to London, guided by MFA instructors, Karen Yurkovich and Daria Filardo, consisted of trips to various museums, galleries, the Frieze Art Fair, artist studios, and other important sites.

A highlight of the trip was attending the Frieze Art Fair and the Royal Regent’s Park with its sculpture garden. A must for contemporary art students in London, they also went to the Tate Modern and saw the permanent collection, a Richard Tuttle installation in the Turbine Hall, a big Malevich exhibition, as well as Sigmar Polke and Louise Bourgeois drawing exhibitions. Several of the students visited the Tate Britain where there was an important exhibition on Turner along with the Turner Prize shortlisted artists. Many went to the National Gallery and saw an exhibition with the late paintings of Rembrandt and attended a lecture by Simon Schama. Some students also went to the National Portrait Gallery where they viewed an exhibition on William Morris. Others went to go see private galleries with artist Luca Bertolo including Arcade Fine Arts. Some students went to Sir John Soane’s Museum and also to a show or concert. During their free time, many also checked out the Borough Market and Camden Town. Needless to say, with all there is to do in London, the trip was jam-packed and exciting for all.
